Pine tree The name pine tree is believed to have been created by dropping the 'ㄹ' in a compound word of 'pine' and 'tree'. In pure Korean, pine trees are called ‘sol’. As a side note, chives (jeongguji, sol) are called "sol" by another name. There is also a theory that they are called sol because the shape of the chive resembles a pine leaf.
The bark of a pine tree is reddish brown, and as it grows, the surface of the tree trunk cracks like a turtle's shell. The bark of the pine tree looks as if it is wearing iron armor, so it is also mentioned in our national anthem as the pine tree on Namsan Mountain wearing armor.
