돈나무

[돈나무, Australian laurel] 한반도의 남부 해안가 절벽 등 척박한 지역의 양지에 자생하는 상록활엽관목. 돈나무라는 명칭은 돈과 관련 있을 거 같지만 실제로는 똥+나무(제주도말로 똥낭)에서 유래한 이름이라고 한다. 꽃향기가 진하고 향기롭다. 열매에는 끈끈하고 달콤한 액체가 분비되는데 이를 먹기 위해 파리와 벌 등 곤충들이 많이 모여 똥나무라고 부르다가 순화되어 지금은 돈나무라고 부른다고 한다.

 

[money tree, Australian laurel] An evergreen broad-leaved shrub that grows naturally in sunny areas in barren areas such as cliffs along the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The name money tree may seem to be related to money, but it is actually said to come from dung + tree (dongnang in Jeju dialect). The flower scent is strong and fragrant. The fruit secretes a sticky and sweet liquid, and many insects, such as flies and bees, gather to eat it and call it dung tree, but it has become domesticated and is now called money tree.
